There is no night in the Everburning City. There can never be.

                                                                      *****

For four hundred years the Everburning City has withstood the advance of the life-strangling fog known as the Gloam. Its walls have held back five invasions, but on the eve of the sixth, the city's inhabitants know things have changed. Golems are coming out of the mist, and the bodies of the dead are rising at the Gloam's bidding. The city's last and most desperate line of defence comes in the form of the Crafters, individuals who can channel the power of fire, though they risk their sanity each time they do. The brightest of these valiant heroes are Tabitha a'Loria and her apprentice Gerald Reath. Risking their lives, they mount their airships, determined to save the last bastion of humanity - the Everburning City.

Gwyneth had always felt connected to her faith, a higher power presiding over her. That faith had shaken that devastating day those years ago, the day that went on to haunt her every nightmare for years to come. She's still trying to come back from it, to not only restore her faith in life and love, but her faith in herself. The sanctity of her spirit- she prayed for resolve. Every punch was a prayer. Every mile was a hymn. Until her knuckles bled and her knees gave. Azriel had been surrounded by darkness his whole life, a poison on his world, on his being. He exercised restraint in his every waking moment, banishing that darkness within himself. Some guessed of the strain it put on him, but no one knew the extent of it, how deep his scars ran. It was better this way, he was sure. He had always thought that if there were a higher power- which he wholly doubted- such deities must loathe him to have burdened him such darkness. He hadn't much faith in the gods anyway, much less faith that he could sway their opinion on him. But Gwyneth and Azriel did have one thing in common: the quiet fight within themselves. They only knew one way: to go about it alone, couldn't fathom letting another in. But there's a magic in finding someone who is your equal but opposite, something transforming. And frankly, Gwyneth and Azriel could both use a little magic. All characters owned by SJM in the ACOTAR series. Story takes place after the events of ACOSF. Aligns with the events in my other fic: A Storm of Flames and Deceit. I haven't finished Crescent City, so this story takes place outside of the events of those books as well. Blamed for a lethal disease she did not cause, a reclusive necromancer sets out to cure the sickness and save a town before any more victims perish. *** Draped in a cloak of blood and deemed a wicked monster, Evylyn is an immortal necromancer, feared enough to silence any mention of her name. As the accused source of a deadly disease, paired with her infamy in necromancy, she avoids the town of Ensceas at all costs. But Evylyn's fate is decided by a coin toss, and she's forced to break free from her chains of destiny, nearly paying with her life. She's rewarded by a bounty hunter tracking her down, hungry to give her the sanguinary death she deserves. In her eleventh hour, a fellow demigoddess gives her two things: a second chance, and a way to weasel her way into the hearts of those that despise her. Simply, she must remedy the incurable disease that she allegedly caused, preferably before the entire town of Ensceas falls victim to its sickness. Thankfully, Evylyn's infamy didn't come from thin air, and if there's anyone that can rival death, it's her. ----- ❈ ----- INCLUDES: ❈ Sapphic demigoddesses ❈ Badass sunshine x soft-hearted grump ❈ Magical, mysterious malady ❈ Cute baby animals FEATURED ON: ❈ @highfantasy Featured High Fantasy Stories, @OpenNovellaContest's Longlist ❈ @Fantasy, @Romance, @highfantasy, @darkfantasy, @mythandlegend, @StoriesUndiscovered 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝘿𝙖𝙩𝙚: 02/01/2023 𝙀𝙣𝙙 𝘿𝙖𝙩𝙚: 4/17/2023 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙙 𝘾𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩: 28k 𝙂𝙚𝙣𝙧𝙚𝙨: High Fantasy, Romance, Adventure 𝘾𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧: @Xaprith © 2023 [First Edition]
